How I Saw the New Year in

New Year is my favourite holiday.We celebrate it on the 31st of December.

This year I celebrated New Year with my family. On New Year Eve we bought a New Year tree and decorated it with coloured balls and bright lights. We bought presents for our friends and relatives. My mother and I cooked a holiday supper. We made tasty salads, chicken, potatoes and mushrooms. We made a holiday cake, too. We bought a lot of fruit and sweets. We decorated our house with flakes and toys and put beautiful candles on the fireplace. We put a nice tablecloth, place and cups on the table.

Our guests came to visit us in the evening. They gave me wonderful presents. My aunt gave me a teddy bear as a present. My uncle`s present for me was a beautiful doll.

Then Father Frost came to our place. He was so funny! He had a big bag of presents.I told him a poem about winter, and he gave me a computer game as a present.

At last New Year came! We congratulated our dearest and nearest and wished them a Happy New Year! We enjoyed food and drinks. We danced, sang songs and played. I played the guitar. We had a good time together.

New Year was a merry and a happy holiday. I liked it very much.

Наконец, наступил Новый год! Мы поздравили наших самых близких и дорогих и пожелали им счастливого нового дома. Мы наслаждались едой и напитками. Мы танцевали, пели песни и играли. Я играла на гитаре. Мы хорошо провели время вместе.

Новый год был весёлый и счастливый праздник. Мне он очень понравился.

New Year is a great holiday in our country. Everybody likes it very much. It is especially loved by little children. People do not go to work on that day, and children do not go to school. This holiday is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home among the members of the family.

People decorate their houses and usually have a fir-tree which stands in the corner of the room. Those fir-trees are very beautiful. The presents are usually put under these trees. Our parents prepare to this holiday well. They buy a New Year tree, decorate it, buy a lot of tasty food and drinks.

At twelve o’clock in the night people can see the president on TV which addresses them with traditional words of congratulation. At this time people are sitting at the tables to their holiday dinner and enjoy it in a good company. Young people usually organize a dance party and have a lot of fun. Some of them go out into the streets and the squares. The next day friends usually come to wish a Happy New Year to all the members of the family.

The New Year of our life has begun. Everyone hopes it will really be happy.

Новый год- большой праздник в нашей стране. Всем он очень нравится. Он особенно любим маленькими детьми. Люди не ходят на работу в этот день, а дети не ходят в школу. Этот праздник считается семейным праздником. Он, как правило, отмечается у себя дома среди членов семьи.

Люди украшают свои дома и, как правило, ставят ель, которая стоит в углу комнаты. Эти ели очень красивы. Подарки обычно ставят под этими деревьями. Наши родители старательно готовятся к этому празднику. Они покупают новогоднюю елку, украшают её, покупают много вкусной еды и напитков.

В полночь люди могут видеть президента по телевизору, приветствующего их традиционными словами поздравления. В это время люди сидят за столами за праздничным ужином и наслаждаются им в хорошей компании. Молодые люди обычно организовуют танцы и много веселья. Некоторые из них выходят на улицы и площади. На следующий день друзья обычно приходят пожелать счастливого Нового года всем членам семьи.

Новый год нашей жизни начался. Каждый надеется, что он будет действительно счастлив.

What is New Year"s?
Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year"s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year"s day is different from the American New Year because we don"t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year"s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians" New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope. On these days we eat special cakes that we don"t eat during regular days. It is called sticky rice cake " Banh Chung"?. The American New Year is not a significant celebration as the Vietnamese New Year which focuses on traditions, customs, and religious aspects important to all Vietnamese.

Traditionally, the Vietnamese New year is the lunar New Year Festival. It is the most important Vietnamese holiday, and it is called " Tet Nguyen Dan"?. It is a celebration which combines the excitement of the Fourth of July, thanksgiving, Christmas and the beginning of spring as well as the New Year. The traditional Vietnamese calendar runs in cycles of twelve years. A genie, in the form of an animal figure, dominates each year. They are in the following order: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, cock, dog, and hog. As the old year gives way to the new year, the ruling genie quietly bows out to the next genie. To recognize its importance, Vietnamese ancestors invented many rituals, rules and regulations in its honor.

New Year’s Day
My name is Eva. I am 13 years old. New Year is considered the most popular holiday in our family. At the beginning of December everybody has a festive mood. In the city the streets and shop windows are decorated with bright and motley garlands. A huge Christmas tree is put at the main square. We begin to prepare for the holiday. We buy Christmas-tree decorations, tinsel and gifts for each other at New Year’s fairs. At the end of December we put artificial Christmas tree and decorate it for the holiday.

I help my mother to prepare a festive table on December 31. New Year’s Eve always seems to me magical and unforgettable. At midnight after president’s appearance on television chiming clock begins to strike. We wish each other a happy New Year and make a wish and then exchange gifts. When I was a child I found the gifts under the Christmas tree and I thought that Santa Claus had brought them. Although I’m already adult and I don’t believe that Santa Claus exists, on New Year’s Eve I want to find myself in the dream and to believe in a miracle.

There are many holidays in our country. They are: New Year"s Day, Christmas, Women"s Day, Victory Day, May Day and others.

I like New Year"s Day, it is my favourite holiday. The 1st of January is a winter holiday and now it is the first day of the New Year.

Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year"s Day.

The 1st of January is in the middle of winter. The weather is usually fine and there is a lot of snow everywhere. As the 1st of January is a holiday I don"t go to school and my parents don"t go to work.

We usually have got a very interesting New Year"s party at school. We have got it on the 28th or 29th of December.

Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year"s tree at the end of December. Our family has a tradition to buy it. I like to decorate the New Year"s tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star on the top.

My mother and grandmother prepare our holiday supper and lay the table. I make a cake.

All the members of our family clean the flat before this nice holiday and then each of us try to dress well. We like to see the New Year in at home with our relatives. They come to see us at 11 o"clock in the evening.

At 12 o"clock we are sitting at the table and we are glad to see the New Year in. We say, "Best wishes for the New Year!"

I hope that next year will be better than the last one.

The New Year"s Day is always connected with our new hopes and dreams.

It is a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year"s Eve.

I usually get many nice useful things from my parents and relatives.

My parents put their presents under the New Year"s tree.

We don"t go to bed till morning, we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and make jokes.

I enjoy this holiday very much.
